Japan respectively, and calling attention to a request

which Sir R. Hart, in transmitting these documents,

made to him for his assistance in effecting an under-

standing of a similar nature with the Government of

HongKong.

I am to enquire what reply should, in the opinion

of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, be return-

ed to Sir E. Satow's despatch.
